Brumby Downs Square Meaters is a family run business situated in the Maranoa region of South West Queensland. Our cattle are grazed on native and pasture improved pastures.
We have a small stud herd as well as a commercial herd of cross bred Santa Gertrudis cows.

All Stud Cattle sold by us are “Naturally Grass Fed”, healthy, seven in one vaccinated, drenched, well handled, trained to muster with dogs, bike, horses and on foot, as well as Hormone Growth Promotant Free. We have bred our stock from what we believe are the best progeny available and this is reflected in the quality of our stock. We are able to provide transport services if you are unable to personally collect your purchases (please read our Transport service page for further details).
Our stock, are mainly grass fed as we do not believe in excessive feeding of cereal crops to stock. Cereal crops will deliver impressive weight gain, however, is not the best long term fodder for cattle, who require a certain amount of forage material for a healthy and efficient digestive system.

Stud stock undergo a systematic program following weaning from their mothers. Each animal is introduced to hand feeding on a daily basis. This usually consists of a small amount of a combination of Lucerne chaff, steamed barley and copra. The idea is not to increase weight gain, as the Square Meaters do this naturally, but to develop a relationship with the animal. Vaccinations, drenching, branding, ear tagging etc are done during the initial stages of this program. Animals that are not, in our opinion, of a high standard are culled from our stud herd at this stage. Culled heifers are introduced into our commercial herd, whilst culled bulls are cut and sold as steers at our local sale yards or to local Butchers.
